"I Used To Know" is an early composition, from very early 1980's college years. One of those songs that required a little living before a second verse materialized around 1986. As Yusef Lateef says: If you don't live it, it can't come out your horn. Demo from 1987, included on the "RPM" cassette release. Jeff Chapin on drums, TB on everything else.

Lyrics

I USED TO KNOW
(Timothy Brickley & David Rheins)

She woke up with me,
bent down to kiss me,
asked what she could be.
Would she be my lover,
or just another
friend in my time of need?
Would she be my own,
or be left alone
after she gave her all to me?
Oh no, it can’t be so.
I loved her but I made her go.
She took the space,
but never could replace
the love I used to know.

I wake up naked,
lonely without you,
single and feeling old.
What happened to our passion,
in what direction
have our two lives gone?
Is it a lesson learned,
or just a dream deferred?
Where has life left us after all?
Oh no, it can’t be so.
I loved her but I made her go.
She took the space,
but never could replace
the love I used to know.
